Three aspiring psychiatrists were attending their first class on emotional extremes.
"Just to establish some parameters," said the professor to the student from Arkansas, "What is the opposite of joy?"
"Sadness," said the student.
"And the opposite of depression?" he asked of the young lady from Oklahoma.
"Elation," she said.
"And you, Sir," he said to the young man from Texas, "How about the opposite of woe?"
The Texan replied, "Sir, I believe that would be giddy up."

As a group of amateur climbers scaled part of the Matterhorn near Zermatt, Switzerland, a vicious gust of wind came along at a narrow ledge. The guide quickly shouted, "Get down on your knees! You are safe only on your knees!"
That's good advice for all of us: The ledges of life are narrow, and the winds are strong. Only on our knees, seeking God relentlessly in our prayers, can we find safety and security.

When God is involved, anything can happen. Be open. Stay that way. God has a beautiful way of bringing good vibrations out of broken chords. --Charles R. Swindoll

No matter what its source or intensity, there’s something about suffering that simplifies life and draws us back to the basics. Invariably, especially during a time of intense trial, I go back to my theological roots. I go back to what I really believe. I return to the essentials such as prayer and dependence, like getting quiet and waiting on God. I remind myself, God is sovereign … this is no accident. He has a plan and a purpose. --Charles Swindoll

According to a study by the Pew Forum on Religion and Public Life, 30 percent of those in the Congress are Roman Catholic, followed by Baptists (12 percent), Methodists (11 percent), Presbyterians (8 percent), Episcopalians (7 percent), and Lutherans (4.5 percent).

Those Who Mean the Most to Us
When we honestly ask ourselves which person in our lives means the most to us, we often find that it is those who, instead of giving much advice, solutions, or cures, have chosen rather to share our pain and touch our wounds with a gentle and tender hand. The friend who can be silent with us in a moment of despair or confusion, who can stay with us in an hour of grief and bereavement, who can tolerate not knowing, not curing, not healing and face with us the reality of our powerlessness, that is a friend who cares. -- Henri Nouwen

"When you can't see the hand of God moving, trust His face. When you can't see Him working, trust His heart. When you can't and don't understand, hold on to His Word." -- Ken Hutcherson

In those times when we yearn
to have more in our lives
we should dwell on the things
we already have. In doing so,
we will often find that our lives
are already full to overflowing. Jim Stovall

"Both abundance and lack exist simultaneously in our lives, as parallel realities. It is always our conscious choice which secret garden we will tend... when we choose not to focus on what is missing from our lives but are grateful for the abundance that’s present -- love, health, family, friends, work, the joys of nature and personal pursuits that bring us pleasure -- the wasteland of illusion falls away and we experience Heaven on earth." -- Sarah Ban Breathnach

After buying her kids a pet hamster, after they PROMISED they would take care of it, Mom, as usual, ended up with the responsibility.
One evening, exasperated, she asked them, "How many times do you think that hamster would have died if I hadn't looked after it?"
After a moment, her youngest son replied quizzically, "Once?"

The little Sunday School kids sang a song in church for Annika:
Be brave, be strong, the Lord your God is with you.
Put faith in Him; there's nothing He can't do.
God walks with you like a mighty warrior,
He surrounds you with His favor like a shield.
He has put you here for such a time as this.
Now trust Him 'til His plan is revealed. Be brave, be strong!

In Richard Foster's book, “Celebration of Discipline ... The Path to Spiritual Growth,” he divides discipline into three parts:
Inward, Outward, and Corporate discipline. He places simplicity under the category of the Outward Disciplines. Here are his ten ways to order our world so that we can create simplicity in our life.
First, buy things for their usefulness rather than their status.
Second, reject anything that is producing an addiction in you.
Third, develop a habit of giving things away.
Fourth, refuse to be propagandized by the custodians of modern gadgetry.
Fifth, learn to enjoy things without owning them.
Sixth, develop a deeper appreciation for the creation.
Seventh, look with a healthy skepticism at all "buy now, pay later" schemes.
Eighth, obey Jesus' instructions about plain, honest speech.
Ninth, reject anything that will breed the oppression of others.
Tenth, shun whatever would distract you from your main goal: "Seek first the kingdom of God."

A grandfather overheard his granddaughter repeating the alphabet in reverent, hushed tones. "What are you doing?" he asked.
"I'm praying, Grandpa," she said. "I can't think of the right words, so I just say all the letters. God will put them together for me, 'cause He knows what I'm thinking."

I've never understood why women love cats. Cats are independent, they don't listen, they don't come in when you call, they like to stay out all night, and when they're home they like to be left alone and sleep. In other words, every quality that women hate in a man, they love in a cat.

A group of senior citizens were exchanging notes about their ailments.

February 15 5th Anniversary

Birthdays are so important. On our birthdays we celebrate being alive. On our birthdays people can say to us, "Thank you for being!" Birthday presents are signs of our families' and friends' joy that we are part of their lives. Little children often look forward to their birthdays for months. Their birthdays are their big days, when they are the center of attention and all their friends come to celebrate.

We should never forget our birthdays or the birthdays of those who are close to us. Birthdays keep us childlike. They remind us that what is important is not what we do or accomplish, not what we have or who we know, but that we are, here and now. On birthdays let us be grateful for the gift of life.

Golf Rule Book Changes -- 2009 (only applies to Sr. golfers)
Rule 1.a.5 A ball sliced or hooked into the rough shall be lifted and placed on the fairway at a point equal to the distance it carried or rolled into the rough with no penalty. The senior should not be penalized for uncontrollable mechanical phenomena.
Rule 2.d.6 (b) A ball hitting a tree shall be deemed not to have hit the tree. This is simply bad luck and luck has no place in a scientific game. The player must estimate the distance the ball would have traveled if it had not hit the tree and play the ball from there.
Rule 3.b.3(g) There shall be no such thing as a lost ball. The missing ball is on or near the course and will eventually be found and pocketed by someone else, making it a stolen ball. The player is not to compound the felony by charging him or herself with a penalty.
Rule 4.c.7(h) If a putt passes over a hole without dropping, it is deemed to have dropped. The law of gravity supersedes the law of golf.
Rule 5. Putts that stop close enough to the cup that they could be blown in, may be blown in. This does not apply to balls more than three inches from the hole. No one wants to make a travesty of the game.
Rule 6.a.9(k) There is no penalty for so-called "out of bounds." If penny-pinching golf club owners bought sufficient land, this would not occur. The golfer deserves an apology, not a penalty.
Rule 7.g.15(z) There is no penalty for a ball in a water hazard, as golf balls should float. That they do not is a technical problem that manufacturers have to correct. Senior Golfers should not be punished for manufacturer's shortcomings.
Rule 8.k.9(s) Advertisements claim that golf scores can be improved by purchasing new clubs, balls, shoes etc. Since this is financially impractical for the average Senior Golfer, 1/2 a stroke per hole may be subtracted for using old equipment.
Please advise all your senior friends of these important rule changes.

After the visiting preacher finished, a woman came up and said, “You were much better than the preacher we had last Sunday. He spoke for an hour and said nothing.”
“Thank you,” the visiting preacher replied.
“Yes,” she continued. “You did it in fifteen minutes.”

Dog Weather - To tell the weather, go to your back door and look for the dog.
- If the dog is at the door and he is wet, it's probably raining.
- But if the dog is standing there really soaking wet, it is probably raining really hard.
- If the dog's fur looks like it's been rubbed the wrong way, it's probably windy.
- If the dog has snow on his back, it's probably snowing.
Of course, to be able to tell the weather like this, you have to leave the dog outside all the time, especially if you expect bad weather. Sincerely, The Cat

Holding the Hand
As the rain hides the stars, as the autumn mist hides the hills, as the clouds veil the blue of the sky, so the dark happenings of my lot hide the shining of Thy face from me. Yet, if I may hold Thy hand in the darkness, it is enough. For I know that, though I may stumble in my going, Thou dost not fall. -GAELIC PRAYER

When we talk to one another, we often talk about what happened, what we are doing, or what we plan to do. Often we say, "What's up?" and we encourage one another to share the details of our daily lives. But often we want to hear something else. We want to hear, "I've been thinking of you today," or "I missed you," or "I wish you were here," or "I really love you." It is not always easy to say these words, but such words can deepen our bonds with one another.
Telling someone "I love you" in whatever way is always delivering good news. Nobody will respond by saying, "Well, I knew that already, you don't have to say it again"! Words of love and affirmation are like bread. We need them each day, over and over. They keep us alive inside.

If the Good Lord wanted more of us to see the sunrise,
He would have scheduled it later in the day!

Edward Gibbon (“Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire”) lists the reasons for the decline and fall of the Roman system:
1. Family life disintegrated.
2. The world of entertainment became corrupt.
3. Moral absolutes were discarded.
4. The cost of the empire’s military was paralyzing.
5. The empire’s economy collapsed.
Indeed, food for thought in relation to today’s world!

"That's easy, Daddy," the young boy replied excitedly, "It stands for 'Basic Information Before Leaving Earth.'"

From Billy Graham: Most of us follow our conscience as we follow a wheelbarrow. We push it in front of us in the direction WE want to go.

Some ‘Conscience’ Thoughts to Ponder
❖ Conscience is a three-pointed thing in my heart that turns around when I do something wrong, and the points hurt a lot. But if I keep doing bad, the points eventually wear off, and then it doesn't hurt any more.
❖ Conscience is God's presence in man.
❖ Conscience is a still small voice--when it calls, often the line is busy.
❖ Contrary to what this world thinks, conscience does not get its guidance from a Gallup poll.
❖ Conscience should always go to truth for instructions.
❖ Feeding your conscience with excuses is like giving sleeping pills to your watchdog.
❖ Conscience is like a sundial--when the truth of God shines upon it, it points the right way.
❖ Once we assuage our conscience by calling something a "necessary evil," it begins to look more and more necessary and less and less evil.

"Cash, check or charge?" I asked after folding items the woman wished to purchase. As she fumbled for her wallet I notice a remote control for a television set in her purse.
"Do you always carry your TV remote?" I asked.
"No," she replied. "But my husband refused to come shopping with me, so I figured this was the most evil thing I could do to him."

What's the origin of the "at sign" (@)?
Everyone who uses email knows the "at sign," the little "a" with a circle around it. It separates the user's online name from his or her mail server address. Before it was used in email addresses, the "at sign" was used on invoices to show how much each item costs, and in a few other places.
Like its relative the ampersand, the "at sign" was invented in the days before printing presses, to shorten the task of transcribing documents. As short as the word "at" might be, it was still common enough in texts that medieval monks thought it would be worthwhile to shorten it even more. So they looped the "t" around and made it into a circle, saving one stroke of the pen.
The "at sign" has no official one-word name, even though many names have been proposed. Among the proposed names, we like arobase, vortex, and snail.

BROKENNESS by David Yonggi Cho, Pastor of the world's largest church in Korea
All of us who are committed to God desire for Him to use us to help bring about His kingdom purposes. But over the last 40 years I have learned that God cannot use a person who is not broken and completely surrendered to Him.
When Jesus met Peter in his fishing boat, Peter had one reaction: He was convicted. He felt as if he were too sinful for Jesus to be in his boat. He was broken by God's graciousness in allowing him to preach the first sermon in
the church's history after having denied Christ.
As a result of Peter's ministry 3,000 people came to Christ on Pentecost. Peter was also used by Christ to open the spiritual door to the gentile world, bringing many to salvation. God was able to use Peter once he had been broken.
I have met many who are not serving the Lord today because of past sin in their lives. In their hearts they know that they have fallen short.
When a Christian [falls] makes a mistake, I always try to help him put his life together again. I explain that his mistake can be the means by which he can learn to be broken and humble before God.
A lack of brokenness causes a person who is used by God to become proud and arrogant. However, when a man is broken, his heart resists pride. Therefore, he can be used to a greater degree.
